"How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings." Psalms 36:7 KJV
How Your Support Makes a Difference
Addressing the Challenge
Southern Indiana does not have a comfort care home to assist individuals facing end of life as a result of terminal illness. Individuals often find themselves in physical and emotional crises during the end of life as a result of system barriers. No commercial or medicare insurances cover the cost of private caregiving or long-term care. Individuals may not qualify for Medicaid, they may lack the necessary documents to apply for Medicaid or lack the finances to pay for any help to care for themselves.
Private caregiving typically costs $25-30/hr., nursing homes cost between $10,000-$14,000 per month, smaller care homes may cost $3,000-$5,000 per month. Unhoused, low and middle income individuals can scarcely afford these costs. These individuals will often be admitted to a local hospital as a result of an acute pain crisis, or worse, they die on the streets or at home unattended and left to suffer with no one to care for them. They are not afforded the opportunity to pass with dignity and are often not surrounded at death by loving individuals dedicated to walking them through the end of life peacefully. Individuals who are at the end of life require assistance with all activities of daily living as well as administration of medication for comfort by a knowledgeable and supportive person. House of Hesed will ameliorate this burden from underserved individuals facing end of life in Southern Indiana.
